Planning & Sequences of Operations

Overview

Before purchasing and installing a networked lighting control (NLC) system, facility managers and designers should define the owner's requirements and control goals in two design documents: a Control Intent Narrative (CIN) and Sequences of Operations (SOO).

These capture facility and space purposes, operating schedules, applicable codes and standards, integrations, project goals, and preferred vendors. They can start high-level and be refined over time.

Industry standards

Two ANSI/IES standards help structure the CIN and SOO:

  1. ANSI/IES LP-6-20 — Lighting Control Systems: Properties, Selection, and Specification.
  2. ANSI/IES LP-16-22 — Documenting Control Intent Narratives and Sequences of Operations.

Minimum contents

At a minimum, the CIN and SOO should include:

  • A floor plan and the function of each zone.
  • Each light's model number, quantity, parameters, and position.

  • Zone definitions. Divide the site into zones by lighting function. Keep each zone to:

    • No more than 100 devices.
    • A radius of less than ~150 feet, ideally under 9,000 sq ft.
    • Line-of-sight where possible — avoid concrete walls or large metal objects that block wireless signals.

  • Groups and scenes — group number/name, scene number/name, and an approximate scene design per zone.

  • Switches — switch type and quantity, plus the function of each button, per zone.
